Bright Lights, Big City
New York is huge! For first-time visitors, the top of your must-see list has to be the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and a visit to Central Park and Times Square. The Hop-on, Hop-off tour is a great way to get your bearings and learn the layout of the city. It's also a great way to get from attraction to attraction - Manhattan is a big city with big blocks, and it's not possible to walk around the whole city in a day or two.
Where to start? Take your pick. Macy's, Century 21, Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth Avenue are the big name department stores. Canal Street will put you in China Town with many a bargain. The Sephora chain found all around Manhattan will have your eyes popping at their wide range of make-up and beauty products. Madison Avenue is home to many designer shops, like Prada, Chanel, Hermes and Giorgio Armani. For the sports lovers, there's the NBA store on Fifth Avenue or Niketown on East 57th and of course, Tiffany & Co. on Fifth Avenue for that something special.
For avid fans of Sex and the City and Gossip Girl, there are dedicated tours for you. There are also tours which cover famous movie and TV sites and one which covers just Central Park! There are so many shows set in New York like Suits, Girls, Broad City etc. just wandering the streets makes like you feel you are on set. With around 40 shows on Broadway each night (and that's not including off-Broadway!), you're sure to find a show that's right up your alley.
You can get pretty much any food, from any cuisine in the world in New York and the prices range from 99c pizza to $1000 plates at the most exclusive restaurants, but there are some New York specialities ...
Bagels are synonymous with the city, they were brought over by jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe and have become a breakfast stable.
The New York hot dog is an icon and can be purchased from the hundreds of street vendors and their carts. Chicago may challenge New York for the best hot dog but there's nothing like walking the streets of New York with one of these babies.
While pizza is not typically a New York speciality you can find it everywhere and what is different is that you can almost always buy it by the slice.
