San Jose del Cabo & Cabo San Lucas
The two main towns of San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas have two distinct personalities. San Jose del Cabo still retains the tranquil sleepy vibe of a Mexican town with cobblestone streets, intimate restaurants and local shops based around the shady main square and mission church. Meander down the winding narrow streets admiring colourful colonial buildings and small art galleries. Cabo San Lucas, on the other hand, is party town with hip bars, restaurants and a luxury mall centered around the marina. In between the two there is a long 'tourist corridor' with resorts, golf courses and beaches.
Beach Hopping & Playing
The most popular beach in Cabo San Lucas is Medano Beach, or Playa El Medano. There are beachfront resorts located here and it is party central. Aside from soaking up the sunshine it is the place for jet skis, banana boat rides, water skiing and parasailing. Chileno Beach is great for families, snorkelling and scuba diving and Playa Costa Azul is a surfers paradise. Playa Solmar, facing the Pacific Ocean is a great option for escaping the crowds as is secluded by giant rock formations. Other quieter beach options are Playa el Tule and Playa las Viuda. El Arco (The Arch) is a remarkable rock formation rising out of the Sea of Cortez and is situated at Land's End, accessible from Medano Beach or the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Take a water taxi, glass bottom boat, kayak or jet ski to explore and bring some snorkelling gear.
Sights & Things To Do
Los Cabo is well known as a golfing and sportfishing destination, with catch and release Marlin fishing charters. For the active folk, hiking, kayaking through a canyon, or flying over a canyon on a monster zipline at around 80km per hour are options. Nature lovers can visit San Jose's Estuary and Bird Sanctuary or take a whale watching trip. From January to April, 8 of the worlds 11 species of whales come to Los Cabos to breed and nurse their young. Snorkelling, scuba diving and ATV adventures are in abundance. Visit El Arco, a dramatic natural arch rock formation at Land's End, and view the magnificent changing colours as the sun sets. Sunrise is also a magical experience. In March there is the 11 day Festival of San Jose Del Cabo, honoring St Joseph with parties, music, carnivals and parades. In July there is the Festival of St James with parades and festivities throughout the city, re-enactments of battles and street parties.
From November to June, Thursday night is Art Walk. Studios and galleries around Alvaro Obregon in San Jose del Cabo, stay open late so guests can browse their shops. The vibe is inviting with live music in the plaza, snacks on offer and sophisticated restaurants offering extensive wine and tequila lists. The streets are full of locals, tourists and artists. Discover high quality paintings, sculptures, jewellery, beadwork, amber and local handicrafts. Another unique shopping opportunity for art is with a visit to Vitrofusion y Arte, La Fabrica de Vidrio Soplado (The Blown Glass Factory). It is a terrific place to purchase some souvenirs of Los Cabos and if you go before 2pm you’ll be able to watch the artisans at work. Opened in 1990 by a local entrepreneur the factory now employs more than 30 artisans who produce up to 500 one of a kind pieces each day, using recycled, lead-free glass to fulfil custom orders for hotels, restuarants and shops as well as individual buyers.
Los Cabos features a delicious cuisine based on seafood. Chocolate clams are found along the Baja California coast, measuring about 7cm and very meaty. They are generally roasted in their shells or tatemadas, cooked upside down on a bed of stones with dried romerillo or chamizo, and served with flour tortillas and sauces. Fish tacos can be found everywhere but there are also shrimp and octopus tacos, which are served with zucchini, guacamole and cream. Golden brown roasted crabs or smoked marlin tostadas are on the menu as is crushed stingray, which is dried stingray meat fried then simmered with diced tomatoes, green chili, onion, cilantro and a bay leaf, and served on a flour tortilla. A glass of Baja California wine is a lovely accompaniement, or clamato pitahaya juice (tomatoes, onions, celery, spices and a touch of clam)
