Kuta & South Kuta (Tuban)
Surf, Sunshine and Smiles
Once a humble fishing village, Kuta is now a thriving urban area and Bali's busiest beach resort. The first site in Bali to wander down the tourist track, the five-kilometre-long sandy stretch of Kuta is arguably the best beachfront in Bali. Here you can enjoy learn-to-surf classes, followed by a beachside massage, some of Bali's best bargain shopping and a great night out. Kuta is still going through a development boom, with brand new hotels and shopping centres, such as the new Boardwalk, springing up along the ocean front.
The largest hotels and resorts are mostly located in South Kuta. Officially known as Tuban, the term South Kuta is becoming increasingly popular, as both regions are essentially one and the same. South Kuta is slightly further away from the hustle and bustle of central Kuta, but equally as good for its picture-postcard sunsets, wide range of accommodation, bargain shopping and restaurant choices. Its proximity to all the fun of Waterbom Park also makes it an attractive option for families.
You can find any manner of international and local food here. Restaurants are usually either very cheap or the mid-range. Beach-stall food is delicious, filling and very cheap with stalls found dotted along Kuta and South Kuta beaches beneath the trees or road-side awnings. Local delights include nasi campur (a mixed rice dish), baks (meatball soup) and banana fritters, which are all cheap and tasty at any time of day or night.
- Cruise to Nusa Lembongan: Take a day cruise to enjoy the warm waters of this relaxing island paradise.
- Kite Flying on Kuta Beach: There are plenty of traditional kite-stores in Kuta. Bebean (fish-shaped), Janggan (bird shaped) and Pecukan (leaf-shaped) are traditional kites.
- Shop 'til you drop: Among the many markets that surround, don't miss one authentic Balinese market, the traditional market in Kerambitan.
- Fish Foot Spa: Definitely worth a try is Fish Foot Spa, have all your cares nibbled away by tiny fish - they can be found all over Kuta & South Kuta.
